Hiking Through History: The Transformation of Great Ridings Wood

England’s woodland history may surprise many. Contrary to the popular belief that England's forests have diminished, the past century and a half has witnessed many farmlands revert to woods. A case in point is the Great Ridings Wood. While its bluebell-carpeted grounds in April might mislead you into thinking it's an ancient forest, this expanse was an arable land till the 1770s. Intriguingly, the bridleway, known as the Old London Road, once connected the countryside to the bustling city. Today, The Woodland Trust oversees its preservation, ensuring it remains a testament to England’s evolving landscape.
