About the Walk

Experience one of the finest coastal walks in England, traversing the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. On a clear day, enjoy stunning views of the English Channel, Dover Harbour, and the French coast stretching from Boulogne to Dunkerque.

Historical Background

The White Cliffs of Dover were formed between 80 and 65 million years ago, originating in a tropical ocean. The cliffs are composed of chalk, which itself is formed from the remains of millions of sea creatures. The cliffs stretch up to 250 meters deep and are an extension of the North Downs, which run from Farnham to Dover.

Deal Beach is reputedly the landing site for Julius Caesar's Roman forces in 55 BC. Walmer Castle and Deal Castle were constructed by Henry VIII in the 16th century as artillery fortifications against a potential French invasion.
